The Northampton Winter Championships 2026 brought together competitors from more than 16 clubs for a full day of exciting judo in Northampton.
From the first "Hajime!" to the final contest of the day, the event delivered competitive matches, impressive technical performances, and plenty of memorable moments. Athletes of all ages and experience levels stepped onto the mat ready to challenge themselves, resulting in a day packed with determination, learning, and sportsmanship.
For Northampton Judo Academy, it was fantastic to welcome so many clubs, coaches, competitors, and families to our dojo. Events like these provide valuable competition opportunities while strengthening the wider judo community and creating an environment where athletes can continue developing both on and off the mat.
The championships also provided an opportunity to begin the 2026 competition season in style. While medals and results are always important milestones for competitors, the event was equally about gaining experience, building confidence, and creating positive memories through sport.

The day began with the girls, setting an excellent standard from the very first contest.
Competitors demonstrated confidence, determination, and technical skill throughout the morning. Spectators were treated to a variety of impressive throws, strong groundwork exchanges, and excellent hold-downs. Regardless of experience level, every athlete showed a willingness to challenge themselves and step outside their comfort zone.
What stood out most was the attitude displayed throughout the divisions. The girls competed with intensity when the contest started and showed respect and sportsmanship as soon as it ended. These qualities are just as important as any medal and are a true reflection of the values that judo aims to develop.
The energy, focus, and commitment shown throughout the morning helped create a fantastic atmosphere and set the tone for the rest of the championships.

The boys continued the momentum built during the morning session, delivering a series of competitive and entertaining contests throughout the afternoon.
From the youngest competitors to the more experienced athletes, there was no shortage of determination, resilience, and effort on display. Competitors demonstrated a wide range of techniques, tactical awareness, and the willingness to keep fighting until the final seconds of each contest.
The afternoon produced many memorable moments, with athletes showcasing the skills they have been developing in their clubs and training sessions. Every contest presented an opportunity to learn, improve, and gain valuable experience against a variety of opponents.
Events like these provide much more than medals and podium places. They help young people develop confidence, discipline, decision-making skills, and the ability to handle both success and setbacks positively. Every contest offers valuable lessons that contribute to long-term growth, both within judo and beyond it.

Finally, our sincere thanks go to the referees, table officials, volunteers, and Northampton Judo Academy members who helped set up the venue, run the event efficiently, and pack everything away at the end of the day.
