The British Schools Championships is one of the most prestigious competitions in the UK judo calendar for school-age athletes. Every year, hundreds of young Judoka from across Great Britain come together to represent their schools and test themselves against some of the country's best young talent.
The 2026 edition took place in Sheffield and attracted more than 700 competitors across two days of competition. As a Level 3 national development event, the championships are aimed at experienced competitors who have already proven themselves through regional and qualifying events. For many athletes, it serves as an important stepping stone towards higher-level national championships and future elite pathways within the sport.
Luca earned his place at the event through his previous competition performances and arrived ready to take on the challenge.

It was a strong day on the mat for Luca. He won two of his contests by ippon, demonstrating efficient and intelligent judo throughout the day. He managed his energy well, controlled the pace of the contests, and capitalised on opportunities when they appeared. His decision-making and composure under pressure reflected the progress he has been making in training and competition over the past year.
After progressing through the early rounds, Luca reached the semi-final where he faced a very tough opponent who would eventually go on to claim the silver medal.

The contest was one of the most exciting matches of the day from our perspective. Both players gave everything, and the match remained competitive from start to finish. Luca showed determination, resilience, and tactical awareness throughout the contest, pushing his opponent all the way and keeping everyone on the edge of their seats. It was an incredibly close battle, and he came very close to securing a place in the final
Performances like this are exactly what development competitions are about. Competing against high-level opposition provides valuable experience, highlights areas for continued growth, and builds confidence for future events.
We are extremely proud of Luca's performance, attitude, and commitment. Representing both his school and Northampton Judo Academy on a national stage is an achievement in itself, and the way he conducted himself throughout the day was a credit to both.
Luca attended the championships with the support of his parents, who travelled with him and were there throughout the day. Back home, he also had the support of the wider Northampton Judo Academy community, with coaches, teammates, and families following his progress and cheering him on from afar. Competing may be an individual sport, but achievements like these are always backed by a team of people who help make them possible.
Every competition is another opportunity to learn, improve, and move forward. This was another important step on Luca's journey, and we are excited to see what comes next.
Well done, Luca!
