10 of Northampton Judo Academy players competed at BJC Open Championships 2026 on Sunday, 3rd May 2026.

One of the biggest challenges of competing under BJC rules is that once the contest begins, the Judoka is on their own. Coaches and parents can support from the side, but no technical instructions can be given.

That makes these events particularly valuable for both players and coaches. Our Judokas have to make their own decisions, react to situations as they develop and trust the work they have put in during training.

For our coaching team, it is also one of the clearest ways to assess how effective our preparation has been. Without being able to prompt or correct players during the contest, we can see exactly which skills, habits and tactical ideas have become embedded — and which still need more attention in the dojo. It gives us a very honest picture of where our training is working well and where we need to adapt.

Just as importantly, the team atmosphere throughout the day was brilliant. Our players backed each other from the side of the mat, shared what they were learning about the different BJC rules and supported one another through wins and losses.

They competed with confidence, showed respect to everyone they faced and represented the club exactly as we would hope — not just through their results, but through their attitude and behaviour throughout the event.
